• How much should I water?
  • The approximate amount of water that needs to be applied each week for an average, traditional lawn to supplement normal rainfall is listed in the following chart:

  • This chart is a guideline and should be adjusted to whatever weather is occuring each year.  In years of low rainfall, the amounts of the chart should be increased to gain the same results.  For greener grass, more water should be added.
• What type of Sod is good in Colorado?
  • Kentucky Bluegrass is well suited for use in the northern U.S. and Canada.  It has excellent drought tolerance, cold tolerance, good heat tolerance and also grows well in shaded areas. 
• When should I mow and fertilize?
  • Mow when the grass is 3" or taller, but not until at least 2 weeks have passed since installation.  The first few mowings should be done in a diagonal pattern to the way the sod was laid.
  • Fertilizer should be used approximately 3-4 times per year.
• How do I figure square footage?
  • Measure the length and width of the property to be sodded, then mulitply the two figures to each other.  This will give you the square feet needed.  Plan on adding another 4 to 10 percent of sod to allow for the way the sod is laid.
• When can I walk or let my dog walk on the sod?
• • After the roots have taken hold which will be approximately 2 weeks after installation.
• What do I do before I lay sod?
  • Prepare the soil by removal of weeds and debris, eliminating low spots, rototilling compost into the top 3-4" of surface, adding Water Crystals, raking yard smooth, and rolling the ground if desired.
• How late in the year can I lay sod?
  • Sod can be installed all year round providing the ground is able to be prepped.
• What is the difference between Bluegrass and Fescue?
  • Bluegrass is a softer bladed grass than the rougher and tougher bladed Fescue.  Also, Bluegrass is more drought tolerant than Fescue, in that when less water is applied to the grass, Bluegrass will go dormant while Fescue will die.
• Are there different types of Bluegrass?
  • There are hundreds of varieties of Bluegrass.  The variety used by Colorado Turf Inc has been blended for drought tolerance, heat tolerance, disease resistance, and color.  The grass color is dark green with good winter color.
• What do I do if I see mushrooms?
  • Mushrooms are caused by decomposed wood in the base of the sod.  The best way to rid yourself of mushrooms is to use a wetting agent on the affected area to penetrate the water down to the wood which will decompose the wood faster, thereby removing the fuel for the mushrooms.
• What do I do if I have weeds?
  • Wait at least 3 months after sod installation before applying a weed spray.
• How do I get rid of Crab Grass?
  • Use a pre-emerging crabgrass control in March if the weather permits.  Re-apply the crabgrass treatment 6 weeks after the 1st application.
